We recently returned from a beautiful trip with our kids to Maine, and I’m so excited to share our experience with you. Even though the journey began a little rocky (think: surprise strep diagnosis, a head cold, and some back pain), it turned into a trip we’ll never forget. It had been a while since our last vacation, and with the start of our homeschool journey and the busyness of daily life, this getaway felt extra special.
First Impressions of Maine
Maine did not disappoint. The rocky coastline, gentle breezes, and lush greenery were everything I’d hoped for. We traveled during the off-season, which made everything feel peaceful and slow. Rainy spells gave us cozy movie nights and takeout on the couch, while the sunnier moments were spent poolside or exploring the coast.
Where We Stayed
We stayed at Hidden Pond in Kennebunkport, and it was such a lovely experience. From the stocked fridge (yes, almond milk included!) to a dog-friendly setup for our golden retriever puppy, the details made it feel welcoming.
Hidden Pond also offers activities like morning yoga, watercolor painting, and tie-dye—but many are for guests aged 12 and up, so check age restrictions before booking.
Our Favorite Adventures
One of our favorite outings was a day in Portland. We bundled up and visited the Spring Point Ledge Lighthouse. Walking out on the jetty was a highlight for the kids, and the views were stunning.
We ate at The High Roller—famous for their lobster rolls—and stopped by Gorgeous Gelato for the creamiest, most authentic treat. We even picked up some goodies for our pup at a nearby pet shop!
Eats We Loved
- Earth at Hidden Pond: Great for breakfast. Amazing for dinner. We celebrated our trip with a final fancy dinner and it didn’t disappoint. The service was great and the food was even better.
- Rosella: Upscale and flavorful—perfect for sushi lovers. There’s no kids’ menu, but they were kind enough to modify a few dishes (like omitting spice or offering ramen noodles with miso broth). Not exactly kid-focused, but still a great experience for families with flexible eaters.
- The Boathouse: Scenic and casual. Try the quinoa salad with shrimp.
- Rococo Ice Cream: Local, creative flavors in downtown Kennebunkport.
- Mornings in Paris: A quiet little cafe up at the top of the hill in Kennebunkport. They have great coffee, alternative milk options, and amazing crepe’s. I highly recommend either ordering Doordash and getting some coffee and crepe’s delivered in the morning or making a quick morning to trip to enjoy their offerings.
What I’d Pack Again
Maine weather is all about layering. Mornings are chilly, afternoons warm up, and nights cool back down. Here’s what worked for us:
- Hoodies
- Lightweight jackets
- Sneakers + sandals
- Easy layers for kids
- Sunscreen – if it’s cloudy, your amount of sun exposure can be misleading
